The Sugar Canary

The Sugar Canary.

The Sugar canary is falling off his perch because he's so overweight. He was looking to avoid sugar as he heard it was one of the biggest problems causing weight gain. He made sure to look at food labels and skip ones that had a lot of "Sugar". But he didn't see the "Hidden Sugar"

The warning coming from this canary? He didn't look for these 61 synonyms for sugar and then add them all up to find how much sugar was really in his supermarket purchase. So don't forget! , things like Maltol, Barley Malt, Treacle, and Carob syrup are just other words for sugar.

So while you may have escaped the 11 or 12 spoons of sugar in a can of soda, you may not have noticed your "healthy" yogurt may have 7 spoons of sugar.

  1. You know what? The food industry sucks. Organic and natural sugar from foods without any additives. But most people can't afford to do that - and certainly have not been trained to be the sugar police. I wonder how the Canary avoids this? Oh...so many other things to look at too. If you can't pronounce the ingredient, don't buy it. If there are more than 5 ingredients, you don't want it. Time to grow your own or join a farm community where you share the food grown. Again...how many people can do this? We can only hope over time we become better shoppers/eaters/cooks. Thanks for posting.
